Valentine Public School's band program began in 1975. Valentine is recognised as having one of the strongest and longest running school band programs in the Hunter Region.
Junior Band is open for students who are new to band and who are in year 3 and above. Senior Band is for continuing band students in years 4-6.
Students benefit in many ways from their experience in band, not just by developing stronger musical understanding and instrumental skills. The opportunity enables students to further develop their concentration, persistence, organisational skills, confidence, creativity and friendships beyond their own class. Learning an instrument and playing with others is proven to have a positive effect on the brain and this often has a flow on effect of improving achievement in other areas of school.
Students commit to attending all rehearsals and playouts. Performances include in-school events, the Bandfest competition, Coco's Christmas Carols and the Year 6 Solos Night at the end of each year. Other enriching events include an overnight band camp.
Band members may also connect with musicians outside of school, with opportunities available in the Lake Macquarie Winds, regional bands and playing in solo instrumental competitions.
Information regarding things such as instruments, music tutors, uniforms, expectations and fees is forwarded to parents early in the year.
The band program is supported by the Band Committee, which is a sub-committee of the P&C. Parents are encouraged to come along and be part of the Band Committee to support the band and aid in fundraising. Meetings are held as needed, once or twice a term.
These experiences help students build lifelong communication skills, grow their confidence, and develop a strong sense of personal voice—qualities that benefit them well beyond the classroom.
Our extra-curricular highlights
At Valentine Public School, we provide a broad range of extracurricular opportunities that inspire creativity, build confidence and strengthen teamwork. From sport, the arts and music to debating and gardening, students are encouraged to explore their passions, develop new skills and engage in meaningful learning beyond the classroom. These programs not only extend individual talents but also help cultivate a strong sense of belonging and pride within our school community.
Art Club
Valentine Public School’s Art Club is a creative space where students from different stages can explore and enjoy art throughout the week. From Monday to Thursday, and for HPGE students on Friday, children can take part in a variety of art activities, experimenting with different techniques, materials, and projects. The club also provides opportunities to create small artistic pieces to brighten spaces around the school. Art Club encourages imagination, creativity, and collaboration, giving students a fun and welcoming environment to express themselves and share their talents
School Sport
At Valentine Public School, students enjoy a wide range of sporting opportunities and proudly participate in PSSA (Public School Sports Association) competitions. Our school competes in sports such as cricket, soccer, AFL, netball, and Touch Footy, giving students the chance to showcase their talents and teamwork on the field. We also conduct stage sport, where students have the opportunity to participate in and even run tabloid sports, encouraging leadership and collaboration. Participation helps children develop key skills including kicking, throwing, catching, and sprinting, while fostering confidence, resilience, and great sportsmanship. At Valentine, it’s not just about winning - it’s about putting your hand up, giving it a go, and enjoying the thrill of being part of a team.
Acting Ensemble
Valentine Public School’s Acting Ensemble is a vibrant and welcoming space for students who love drama and performance. Students audition for a place in the ensemble and, once selected, have the opportunity to develop a wide range of acting skills with guidance from experienced teachers, including voice, movement, improvisation, and character work. Ensemble members perform in school items, assemblies, and special events, bringing stories and ideas to life on stage. Along the way, students build confidence, creativity, and teamwork, learning from both their teachers and each other. Acting Ensemble is also a wonderful place to make friends, share laughs, and enjoy the thrill of performing in a supportive and encouraging environment. Every member has the opportunity to shine, express themselves, and experience the joy of theatre.
Concert
Every two years, Valentine Public School presents The Concert, a vibrant celebration of creativity, talent, and teamwork. A central theme is chosen and a script developed, with each grade bringing the theme to life through singing, choreography, and performance. Students rehearse weekly, building confidence and skills, and participate in dress rehearsals to prepare for the big day. Performances take place at a local venue, giving students the excitement of sharing their talents on a professional stage with family, friends, and the wider community. The Concert is a joyful, collaborative experience where children make memories, enjoy the spotlight, and celebrate their creativity. It is a highlight of the VPS calendar, full of energy, pride, and happy smiles.
Gardening Club
At Valentine Public School, our Gardening Club meets daily, welcoming students with green thumbs, curious minds, and a love of getting their hands in the soil. Students take part in planting, watering, weeding, fertilising, sweeping, and harvesting as they care for our thriving garden. Different crops grow throughout the year, with seasonal produce such as tomatoes, lettuce, spinach, beetroot, basil, parsley, carrots, strawberries, and bok choy. It’s also a great time to meet and make friends, whether working together under the sun or enjoying the gentle rain. Students learn teamwork, responsibility, and environmental care, and they enjoy taking home the fresh produce they’ve helped grow. The Gardening Club is a warm, welcoming space where every child is welcome and can flourish.
Excursions and Incursions
At Valentine Public School, students enjoy a variety of excursions and incursions that bring learning to life. Excursions give students the chance to explore and learn in real-world settings, while incursions bring engaging, hands-on experiences directly into the school grounds. These opportunities enrich the curriculum, spark curiosity, and allow students to connect their learning with the world around them in meaningful and exciting ways.
Rug Club
Rug Club at Valentine Public School offers a calm and comforting alternative to the busy playground at lunchtime. Students are invited to settle onto a cosy rug under the sun, where they can enjoy board games, Chess, imaginative play, reading, colouring, drawing, or building creations of their own. It’s a peaceful space designed for those who enjoy quieter moments, gentle conversations, and time to unwind. Rug Club is also a wonderful place to spend time with friends or to meet new ones in a relaxed, friendly setting. Warm, welcoming, and unhurried, Rug Club gives every child a chance to recharge and enjoy lunchtime their own way.
