What students learn
Students learn a wide range of subjects in the NSW curriculum. They build skills, think creatively and prepare for life beyond school.
At our school, students can take part in special religious education (SRE) or special education in ethics (SEE) classes, depending on what’s available. These classes are delivered by approved providers.
When enrolling your child, you’ll be able to choose an option from the approved providers offered at our school. Students not attending SRE or SEE are given supervised alternative meaningful activities.
You’re welcome to change your choice at any time. Just let us know in writing or use the online form (if available at our school).

Welcome to Our School Library & Media Centre Inspiring curious minds, fostering future-ready learners.
At our school, the Library and Media Centre is a vibrant and inspiring space where students do far more than just borrow books — it’s where a love of learning, creativity, and innovation come to life.
We proudly celebrate a love of reading throughout the year with exciting events and initiatives that bring stories to life and foster a strong reading culture across the school. These include:
· CBCA Book Week and the Children’s Book Council Awards
· Our popular biennial Book Week Parade
· National Simultaneous Storytime
· The Premier’s Reading Challenge
· The ever-popular Scholastic Book Fair
In addition to these celebrations, students have access to a diverse collection of fiction, non-fiction, and graphic novels, along with a 24/7 online eBook library, ensuring reading remains accessible anytime — whether at home, on holidays, or after school.
Our library also features a purpose-built Media Centre, where students develop essential digital literacy and future-focused skills through engaging, hands-on experiences such as:
· Coding and Robotics
· 3D Printing and Design
· Filmmaking and Green Screen Production
· Animation and Digital Storytelling
What sets this space apart is our commitment to real-world learning with meaningful impact. In partnership with Project Humble, students are empowered to tackle genuine environmental and community challenges, such as:
· Caring for our school beehive — learning about sustainability, pollination, and food production while harvesting and selling our own honey
· Designing medical devices to treat wombats suffering from mange
· Constructing seahorse hotels to help protect the endangered White’s Seahorse
These authentic, hands-on experiences help students develop a broad range of literacies — from traditional reading and research to digital, environmental and design literacies — supporting them in becoming creative thinkers, problem-solvers, and compassionate citizens with the skills and confidence to shape a better world.
In our school library, students don’t just learn — they imagine, create, and lead.
VPS Homework Policy
At Valentine Public School we believe that the role of homework in our student’s lives needs to be considerate of international research, NSW Department of Education Policy and community consultation in order to structure a school based policy that satisfies departmental requirements and the needs of families and individual students.
Community consultation and survey provides evidence that our families want choice in decision- making around homework for students and that families are considerate of wellbeing for their child and the family in this decision- making process. It is important that families are able to make their own decisions based on what is best for the family’s work/ life balance and life choices.
Homework may help students by complementing and reinforcing classroom learning, fostering good lifelong learning and study habits and providing an opportunity for students to be responsible for their own learning and/ or it may have as some international research suggests, not necessarily have as significant impact on future learning as we may have previously believed.
Homework provides an opportunity for parents to participate in their child’s education. Parents in partnership with the school should feel confident to make decisions around homework for the student based on individual needs and family beliefs and wellbeing.
Our VPS Homework Hub can be accessed HERE or from our school website.

Our school uses explicit teaching. This means we clearly tell students what they are learning, why it is important and how to do it step by step. Explicit teaching helps students understand new ideas by breaking them into smaller parts.
